Super Mario

Here I will show off my game, Super Mario. It's a version of Super Mario World, which shpuld run on most SNES emulators, and a download will be provided soon.

Super Mario is a currently ongoing game, with 15 full levels currently completed, with more being worked on. It has a fully working new overworld map, new islands, and even though graphics are not my best point, I have included custom graphics in some parts. The level designs are not just by myself, each level has been put through a grilling playtesting process, which has made some of the levels almost impossibly hard. Because of this, there are 2 versions of the game, the Easy version, which is just like any other Mario game, and a Hard version, which at times becomes almost impossible. Completing the game with the Easy version, and then the Hard version is almost the only way to eventually finish the game.

The Hard version is not just a harder version of the easy one though. The way the level design works is:Super Mario Hard version

  1. The basic level is created, with jumps, falls and other basic objects.
  2. The level is playtested to see if it is possible to complete it, with changes being made as necessary.
  3. When playtesting is over, the level is populated with enemies, at some of the most akward positions.
  4. The level is playtested again, once again to see if it is possible to complete.
  5. Once this is finished, it is placed in the Hard version. The editing process then begins again for the Easy version, removing certain elements, editing the layout, or in some cases a full rework of the level. This is once again playtested before being placed in the Easy version.

The design process is long and grueling, with some of the hardest levels ever made for a Mario game where you know how to still finish the level in it. The game is still being worked on, and a demo should eventually be avaliable. Super Mario Easy version

I gave this version to a massive Mario fan, and he became addicted to it, comparing it to Super Mario Bros. 3, a game that is yet to be beaten in my eyes. He described it as "hard", but enjoyable.

And finally, I have restarted work on it due to New Super Mario Bros.. I was very dissapointed by it, finding that the levels were empty, dull and didn't just have that magical feel. And, several levels in NSMB have similaraties to my levels, but the levels in Super Mario are full of life and never have that "empty" feel.

Alternatively, you can check out my very critical review of NSMB here.
